Antarctica

Antarctica, Charlotte Bay: Snow-covered mountains, clouds hanging low over a quiet bay where whales dive for food, and the evening light glinting off the water makes one feel like they have found paradise.

Antarctica, Portal Point; I enjoyed the views of the majestic mountains covered in deep layers of snow in Antarctica. On cloudy days, of which there were many, Antarctica seemed to be a black and white world devoid of color.

Antarctica: Although nights were short in summertime Antarctica, when the clouds and fog settled in over the water, the evening turned quiet, and a single iceberg stood out from the rest.

Antarctica: This silhouette of photographers on their Zodiac standing and trying to get a shot of the whale diving was how many of our days were spent along the Antarctic Peninsula. There were so many whales diving at Portal Point we didn't have to go far to get a shot of them.

Antarctica: We sailed through calm waters as we entered the narrow Lemaire Channel on a cold and icy morning.

Antarctica: The calm water and the early morning light amplified the stillness of the icy water and the quiet solitude at one of the most secluded locations on earth... Lemaire Channel along the Antarctic Peninsula.

Antarctica: On a hill overlooking the icy but calm Paradise Bay, a Gentoo penguin mother tends her twin babies.

Antarctica, Paradise Bay: As we pulled in to Paradise Bay, the Greenpeace ship Arctic Sunrise was moored near the Argentine Almirante Brown Antarctic Base Station, whose red buildings are seen in the center of the image. The bay was dead calm and the beautiful reflections of the snow-capped mountains in the water lent a peaceful serenity to the scene.

Antarctica, Gourdin Island: A raft of Chinstrap Penguins were porpoising in the water around Gourdin Island, which is near the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Antarctica: Our expedition ship named Aurora.

Antarctica: I titled this image "Iceberg Caldera" because its shape reminded me of the caldera left over after a volcanic eruption occurs.

Antarctica: Many of the icebergs in Antarctica had beautiful shapes.

Antarctica: Icebergs can be very, very large!

Antarctica: We typically left the ship twice a day. Most of our little expeditions were water landings from the zodiacs onto the rocks of a nearby land mass. I sat out one outing when the snow was pretty heavy, but I was able to go out and get some shots of the zodiacs as they left the ship from the upper deck.

Antarctica: It is hard to describe the beauty of being up close to icebergs in the Antarctic. They are a beautiful bright turquoise color underneath the surface that gently fades off into the dark depths of the crystal clear water below.
